I love a city that embraces pop-ups and one city that does it time and time again is Milan. And it’s not just during the wonderful Milan Design Week, it happens all year round. For the last three years, Elle Decor Italia has created the Elle Decor Grand Hotel to coincide with Milan Fall Design Week, which looks at the constantly evolving concepts of the hotel industry. This year Neri&Hu have designed the interior for the Elle Decor Grand Hotel, entitled ‘Invisible Rooms.’ The interior concept for Invisible Rooms by Neri&Hu was inspired by Italo Calvino’s novel ‘Invisible Cities,’ and the theme of travel and discovery. I read this book when I was undertaking my Post Graduate Diploma in Architectural Interior Design and found the language totally captivating. It’s a collection of about forty-ish short stories of imaginary cities that the famous Venetian explorer Marco Polo tells to emperor Kublai Khan. It reflects on the concept of living in a city, the concept of home, and the concept of belonging somewhere. If you haven’t read it I’d definitely recommend it.
The Elle Decor Grand Hotel’s concept of hospitality is an immersive pop-up experience with an achingly contemporary vision to recreate an imaginary world inside a historical Milanese palazzo. Architects Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu have divided the hotel into nine rooms, linking each one to the concept of hospitality. There is a lounge populated with indoor greenery, a restaurant for the ideal shared banquet, a suite overlooking the street, a reimagined library, a cinema room and a courtyard space to rediscover the sky. Poliform was responsible for creating the interiors, from the forest-lounge to the nave restaurant for the perfect collective banquet and includes their beautiful Artex kitchen and the perfectly proportioned Gaston armchairs. But not surprisingly the Invisible Rooms by Neri&Hu also features many products designed by the pair such as the Frame Bed, Commune Stool and Extend Mirrors by De La Espada, the LAN collection for Gan Rugs launched at Salone Del Mobile this year and the Utility stools, Ming chairs and Ming coffee tables designed by Neri&Hu for Stellar Works. I just wish I could see it in person myself, a perfect design travel destination if you ask me.
The Elle Decor Italia curated temporary hotel is open from October 5-21. It closes on Sunday so if you’re in the neighbourhood make sure you take a look.
